Puttin’ on the Eco: Fashion in Vancouver Gets Green
Can fashion be eco-friendly? Myriam Laroche, founder of Eco Fashion Week, says ‘of course’!
From April 27-29, Laroche and her team presented fashion shows, event galas, educational forums and press events that showed a love of fashion and a passion for protecting the earth can indeed be a beautiful combination.
Now in its 8th edition, Eco Fashion Week has grown from humble beginnings into a fabulous three day event with involvement from local fashion heavy-hitters such as Holt Renfrew, Obakkiand Value Village. The event’s goal is two pronged: one, to shift the fashion industry towards healthier design and distribution methods, and two, to inform fashion shoppers about ways to dress their best, while also making ethical and eco-conscious decisions.
Laroche is inclusive in her agenda, saying “there isn’t just one way to be ‘eco’. We all need to make choices that suit us, and at the same time show an awareness for how our choices affect the environment we all depend on.” Whether that choice is to wear all vintage articles, or to buy new articles at Holt Renfrew with part proceeds to the Obakki Foundation, Laroche shows that we can all make a difference in our own way.
