Make space for your resolutions
This is the time of year we’re shouting our goals from the rooftops: “New year, new me!” As much as we take the changing year as a reason to get motivated and resolve to make big changes in our lives, it can be tough to come up with a realistic plan.
For those resolutions that you can work towards at home, you’ll need to make sure you have space to achieve each goal. Here are some examples of home-based resolutions, and how to prepare your environment so accomplishing it all is a breeze:
“I’m going to work out”
One of the most common new year’s resolutions is to get more exercise–and there are no excuses if you’re doing it from the comfort of home. You’ll be more motivated if there’s enough room, and nothing keeping you from accessing your equipment. Whether it’s a set of weights, a yoga mat or a full-sized treadmill, keep floor space clear so you don’t need to move furniture around. Simplify your living setup. If you don’t want to sell or donate extra furniture, move it into offsite storage for six months to give yourself a good head start on your home workout plan.
“I’m going to save money”
On top of your new savings plan, you can make extra money by selling some personal belongings. Whether it’s a spare item or something you don’t use more than once a year, pad your wallet and simplify your living situation by posting to eBay, Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.
“I’m going to update my wardrobe”
If your new year’s resolution is to make a grand entrance at work with a new look, you’ll need to say “out with the old” first. Before you make any new purchases, go through your dresser and closet. Haven’t worn something in years? Those shoes and jackets can go straight to the donate pile. If they’re still in good shape, drop off name brand items at your nearest consignment shop or list them for sale online.
“I’m going to quit smoking”
If you’re finally putting down the cigarettes, get your home ready. Steam clean carpets and wash linens and curtains to minimize the smell of old smoke. The less things you have at home to remind you of your old habits, the easier it may be to follow through on this resolution.
“I’m going to spend more time with family and friends”
It’s tough to feel motivated to invite people over when you aren’t proud of your house or apartment. Be proud of your space! Make it welcoming with areas designated for entertaining, and keep things tidy and fresh.
“I’m going to relax more”
They say that it’s tough to have a clear mind with a messy home. Clean, simplify, and reorganize. Everything should have its place. Set up a reading nook if that’s your idea of relaxing. Less stuff, more space, and more clarity.
